Drug Absorption :- General Considerations Chapter Of Medicinal Chemistry - I

Drug absorption occurs through one of many processes mentioned below

∎ Passive diffusion

∎ Carrier medicated or active transport

∎ Pore transport

∎ Phagocytosis and pinocytosis

∎ Ion pair absorption

∎ Filtration

Passive diffusion :-   In this type of absorption the molecules move from a higher concentration. the movement of molecules is caused by their kinetic energy and does not involve external energy. consider the concentration gradient (dc), which acts across the membrane.

Carrier medicated or active transport :-   Most of drugs are absorbed by passive diffusion. However, some molecules , such as amino acids, glucose and folic acid, are absorbed by the action of transport proteins, where transport membrane have specialized role,. for active transport there should be structural similarities between drug and substrate being transported across the cell membrane.
